About Huawei

Huawei is one of the oldest Chinese smartphone brands, having been around since 1987, and it’s also one of the most successful smartphone makers in the world. In fact, during 2020 it briefly became the top smartphone brand in the world (in terms of the number of phones shipped).

Huawei makes a wide range of phones at various prices, from affordable handsets to top-end models, and its best phones often stand out for their cameras, which tend to be among the best available on a smartphone.

However, it’s worth noting that recent Huawei Android phones don’t have access to the Google Play Store or Google apps, and that the company has now launched its own operating system, which is likely to be increasingly used on its phones instead of Android.

Which Huawei phones support 5G?

The Huawei P40, Huawei P40 Pro, Huawei P40 Pro Plus, Huawei P40 Lite 5G, Huawei Mate 40 Pro and Huawei Mate 20 X 5G all support 5G. There are other Huawei phones that do too, but at the time of writing they aren’t widely available in the UK.

Which 5G Huawei phone should I choose?

The Huawei Mate 40 Pro is arguably the most high-end 5G Huawei phone, so that’s a top choice if you want a cutting-edge flagship. The Huawei P40 Lite 5G meanwhile is a great choice if you want something more affordable, with the rest of the range filling out the middle.

Top 5G Huawei phone

The Huawei Mate 40 Pro is a sublime handset and the best Huawei model available at the time of writing. It has an excellent triple-lens camera (including a 50MP main, a 20MP ultra-wide, and a 12MP periscope with 5x optical zoom), plus a great design, long battery life, and a big 6.76-inch screen.

Most affordable 5G Huawei phone

The Huawei P40 Lite 5G is the cheapest 5G Huawei phone at the time of writing. This has a quad-lens camera, a 6.4-inch 1080 x 2310 screen, 128GB of storage, 6GB of RAM and a solid amount of power, so while the price is relatively low the specs are still fairly high.

Top value 5G Huawei phone

The Huawei P40 is arguably the best value 5G Huawei phone. It’s a high-end but not top-end handset, with all the power and other specs most users will need, but a lower price than the Pro and Pro Plus models.

The Huawei P40 has a 6.1-inch 1080 x 2340 OLED screen, a powerful Kirin 990 chipset, a stylish design, and a triple-lens camera, with a 50MP main sensor, a 16MP ultra-wide, and an 8MP telephoto (with 3x optical zoom).

Latest 5G Huawei phone

The is the latest widely available Huawei 5G phone at the time of writing, and it’s also the best, with high-end specs and brilliant cameras.

However, the Huawei P50 range has now landed in China, and it’s likely that at least some of these phones will make their way to the UK eventually, so keep an eye out for them.

Huawei in summary

Huawei is a titan of the smartphone world, and one that excels when it comes to hardware – particularly the visual design of its phones and their cameras.

The lack of the Google Play Store in recent years and now the move to a new operating system on some phones has held the company back a bit, but for adventurous buyers they remain top-class handsets.
