What plans are available with unlimited data?

Three offers unlimited data on every key plan type, including SIM Only, Pay Monthly with a phone, Data Only, home broadband, mobile broadband and Pay As You Go. Note that in the case of mobile broadband only 4G data is available at the time of writing, but the other plan types can all be had with 5G.

Are there any fair usage restrictions?

Three offers truly unlimited data in the UK, meaning no fair usage restrictions at all. However, you are limited to 12GB per month when roaming abroad. That makes it better than most networks for UK use, but not one of the best if you want to use a lot of data on your international travels.

Are there any speed restrictions?

No, Three doesn’t restrict your speed at all on unlimited data plans (or on any of its current plans). So the only limitation is the coverage and network technology in your area – if you’re near a 5G mast then you can expect incredibly fast speeds.

Is unlimited tethering included?

Yes, Three allows you to use as much of your data as you want when tethering, and with an unlimited data plan that means there aren’t any tethering limits, at least in the UK. When abroad, you’re limited to 12GB of data per month in the EU, while outside the EU tethering isn’t allowed at all unless you purchase a Data Passport (for £5 per day).

Can unlimited data be used abroad?

No, when you’re abroad you can only use up to 12GB of data per month on Three, even on an unlimited data plan. Additional use will cost extra. From May 23^rd, 2022, you’ll also have to pay £2 per day to use any of your allowances abroad in Europe, or £5 per day when further afield, though this won’t apply to customers who joined or upgraded before October 1^st, 2021.

However, a Data Passport is available which offers unlimited data when abroad for £5 per day.

Is 5G data included?

Yes, 5G comes as standard on all of Three’s SIM cards, which means whatever plan you choose you’ll have access to 5G data – you just need to make sure your device also supports 5G.

Are unlimited plans available with a multi-plan discount?

Three provides exclusive offers to existing customers, so that if they get a second SIM or device, they can get it at a discount. However, these offers only apply to select plans and devices and are changing all the time. For the full, up to date list, check Three’s site.

Can I gift data on an unlimited plan?

Three doesn’t offer data gifting, so if you choose an unlimited data plan then only you will be able to benefit. The exception to that is to use tethering, since you could always share your connection with someone else’s device and essentially gift your data to them like that. There are no restrictions when tethering in the UK either, but you do need to be near the other device for this to work.

Alternatives

Loads of UK networks offer unlimited data, so there are plenty of choices beyond Three. Other options include EE, O2 or Vodafone, which are the UK’s other major networks, and each of which have different coverage to Three (and to each other).

If you want the same coverage as Three then consider Smarty or iD Mobile, both of which are smaller and often cheaper networks.
