Why choose a Sky Mobile phone contract?

Sky Mobile is a good choice for a lot of reasons. For one, it uses O2’s infrastructure, which means it has rapidly growing 5G coverage and over 99% population coverage with 4G, meaning you can get a good signal in most places.

All Sky Mobile plans come with unlimited calls and texts as standard, and with just seven data allowances to choose from, the choice isn’t overwhelming. The minimum term contract is just 12 months and you can change your data allowance every month if you want without being penalised. As a bonus, Sky promises not to raise prices mid-contract either so you know you won’t face any unexpected price hikes.

If you’re already a Sky TV customer, Sky Mobile is an even better choice as you can get unlimited streaming of Sky TV on your phone without using your data allowance. And if you’re not a Sky TV subscriber, you can still enjoy watching certain Sky apps – such as Sky News – without using your data.

How can I keep my number when switching?

This is a simple process that applies to any mobile provider. Once you have chosen your new mobile deal with Sky, you need to request what is known as a PAC (short for Porting Authorisation Code) from your old provider. The easiest way to do this is to text PAC to 65075. You should almost immediately receive a 9-digit code in return which will be active for 30 days.

If you are ordering your new SIM deal online, there may be an opportunity to input this code as part of the purchase process. If not, you can give the code to Sky over the  phone or online and it will arrange the number transfer for you.

Sky Mobile added extras

The main extra offered by Sky Mobile is data rollover. This lets you roll over any unused data from one month to the next and store it for up to three years in what Sky refers to as your Sky Piggybank. This means that if you don’t use all your data one month, you’ll have extra to use the following one.

Sky also allows you to spend your Piggybank data savings, if you accumulate enough. If you are considering buying a new phone or tablet, you can claim £10 off with 25GB of Piggybank data, £20 off with 50GB of data, or £32 off with 80GB of data.  Alternatively, you can trade in 50GB for a £25 voucher to use with iSmash Repair, which might come in handy if you drop your phone. Or for 10GB you can get a fiver off mobile accessories with Sky. Finally, if you fancy a new Sky Ocean Rescue cup of thermal bottle, you can trade in 10GB for £8 off or 20GB for £10 off.

Additionally, Sky Mobile offers Wi-Fi Calling with select handsets, meaning you can call and text as normal over Wi-Fi, which is very useful if you’re ever somewhere with a Wi-Fi network but little or no phone signal.

Sky Mobile subscriptions - Swap12 and Swap24

Sky offers customers the opportunity to upgrade their handset early with its two Sky Swap contracts. If you like the idea of changing your phone as soon as possible, then Swap12 is a good choice. Swap12 is, slightly confusingly, a 24-month contract whereby at the end of month 12, you can swap your phone for a new one, and, subject to it being in good condition and in working order, use its value to pay off the second 12 months of the 24-month contract.

Swap24 works in the same way, except you sign up for a 36-month contract, and at the end of 24 months, you can swap your phone and use its value to pay off the rest of the contract. There is also an option to sign up to Swap36, which is a 48-month contract.

Sky Mobile phone upgrades

If you like to regularly upgrade your phone, you can do this with Sky Mobile. In fact, you can upgrade your device any time you want to after the first 31 days of your contract - you don’t have to wait for 12 or 24 months. However, if the value of the device is not enough to pay off the contract, you can choose to either pay this off separately or have the outstanding amount added to your next bill.

Unlimited data

Sky is one of the relatively few providers that does not offer unlimited data deals. The highest amount of data on offer from Sky Mobile is 50GB per month. This may seem rather paltry in comparison with an unlimited data deal, but for most people that use their home and work broadband connections to get online, mobile data is only required for those in-between times when you are not connected to either.

Instead of competing with providers that offer unlimited data, Sky is catering for a different market – offering a reasonable array of limited plans at reasonable prices. In fact, Sky’s smallest data allowance of 2GB costs just £6 per month, making it one of the cheapest deals on the market.

What is Fair Usage?

A Fair Usage Policy is put in place by mobile and broadband providers to ensure that the flow of internet traffic keeps moving and no one is hogging bandwidth that then slows down the connection for others. Sky Mobile states that it may redirect internet traffic from 4G to 3G for example, in order to keep customers connected if traffic becomes too congested.

Although Sky Mobile does not have a Fair Usage Policy for data (as it does not offer unlimited data), it does have a fair usage policy for its “unlimited” free calls and texts. In the Sky Mobile contract, it states that usage of free calls and texts “should not exceed that reasonably expected of a reasonable person using the Sky Mobile services for personal purposes as a consumer.” In other words, if you draw attention to yourself by sending excessive amounts of texts or making exceptional amounts of phone calls, Sky might decide to step in and temporarily suspend your usage or charge you its standard rate for excessive calls or texts until it has established what is going on.

4G and 5G Coverage

Sky Mobile operates over the O2 network and claims to offer 99% 4G coverage in the UK, but this does refer to population coverage rather than geographical coverage, so you are likely to still find some areas where you cannot get a signal. However, all the networks claim 99% coverage so you won’t find better elsewhere when it comes to 4G.

Sky Mobile’s 5G coverage is continually growing, with O2’s 5G signal now available in almost 200 towns and cities across the UK.

Sky Mobile 5G speeds

According to the most recent speed tests carried out by Opensignal, O2’s 5G speed averages 100.6Mbps, which compares very favourably against its average 4G speed of 18.2Mbps. However, this is slower than the average 5G speeds of both EE (129.2Mbps) and Three, which is the fastest by far, averaging an impressive 204.3Mbps.

Data roaming

Sky Mobile allows you to use all your minutes, texts and data in over 55 EU and EEA countries, the USA and Australia for £2 per day with its Roaming Passport Plus. If you are travelling elsewhere in the world, roaming charges will apply. Note that you will not be able to roam outside the UK if your Sky Mobile spend cap is set too low – you can adjust this in your account settings.

Tethering

Also known as creating a mobile hotspot with your phone, tethering is using your mobile data to get online on a separate device, such as a tablet or laptop. Sky Mobile does allow tethering and you can choose to use all your data for it if you wish.

If you want to use your Sky Mobile signal to watch a Sky app (such as Sky News, Sky Sports or Sky Go) on a second device, you won’t need to use any data as your mobile will recognise that you are watching Sky content.

Bear in mind that tethering will likely use up your data allowance more quickly than usual as both your phone and the device you have connected to it will both be consuming data, especially if you have any background apps running on either device. You will also find it runs down your phone battery more quickly than usual.

Sky Mobile customer service

Sky Mobile can be contacted on 0131 278 3778 for free by Sky Mobile customers between 8am and 8pm Monday to Friday. Sky also offers a large amount of information on its website for customers to refer to if they have a problem.

According to the latest survey on customer satisfaction by Ofcom, Sky Mobile fared well, with only six complaints per 100,000 customers (against an average of 10) and only 7% of customers in total having a reason to complain (against an average of 9%). Sky Mobile’s response time was also good, with the average call waiting time of just one minute and 50 seconds (against an average of two minutes and 15 seconds).
