London Underground should have full 5G coverage by the end of the year

London Underground

In their latest update, Transport for London (TfL) and Boldyn Networks (which has partnered with TfL to roll out mobile coverage across the Underground), have confirmed that they’re on track to bring 4G and 5G to the entire London Underground by the end of 2026.

Roughly 60% of stations now have coverage, and recent progress includes extending coverage to Bakerloo tunnels between Queen’s Park and Edgware Road, and Metropolitan line tunnels between Euston Square and King’s Cross St Pancras, and between Barbican and Moorgate.

You can also now get coverage on the Circle and District lines between Cannon Street and Monument, Sloane Square and Victoria, and Bayswater and Paddington.

Vauxhall, Temple, Nine Elms, and Gloucester Road stations now have coverage too, as do parts of King’s Cross St Pancras, Victoria, and Paddington.

Coming to more places soon

The next phase will bring coverage to more of the Northern, Bakerloo, and Metropolitan lines, which should all have almost complete coverage by the end of summer.

Coverage is also being extended to parts of the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and to the Windrush line between Highbury & Islington and New Cross.

Seb Dance, Deputy Mayor of London for Transport, said: “It’s brilliant to see this continued progress on the Mayor’s promise of delivering 4G and 5G across the London Underground, with more mobile coverage for passengers across an ever-growing network of lines and stations. In an increasingly digital world, we’re committed to ensuring that all Londoners and visitors have the connections they need – even whilst on the move – as we build a better London for everyone.”

This infrastructure isn’t tied to a specific network, and all the UK’s major mobile operators – EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2 – have signed deals to access it, so you should be able to take advantage of this work regardless of your network.

And the new Emergency Services Network (ESN) is also rolling out across the London Underground, so that police, fire, and ambulance services will have access to life-saving data and communication capabilities across the Underground.
