About Xiaomi

Xiaomi is a massive Chinese brand that’s risen to become one of the biggest smartphone makers in the world, briefly even taking the number one spot to put it ahead of Samsung and Apple.

Founded in 2010, Xiaomi initially found success in its home market of China along with India, but more recently it’s ventured west, and is now a major player in lots of other countries too – including the UK.

The company’s Xiaomi Mi range (which is now dropping the ‘Mi’ to just include numbers) is its flagship, but the company makes many other interesting phones too.

Which Xiaomi phones support 5G?

The Xiaomi Mi 11, Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite, Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, Xiaomi 11T Pro, Xiaomi 11T, Redmi Note 10 5G, Poco F3, Xiaomi Mi 10T, Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite, Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro, and Redmi Note 9T all support 5G.

Which 5G Xiaomi phone should I choose?

That depends on whether you want a flagship like the Xiaomi Mi 11 and Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, or something more affordable like the Redmi Note 9T. Xiaomi makes a wide range of 5G phones, so there are plenty to choose from.

Top 5G Xiaomi phone

The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is the most high-end Xiaomi 5G phone. It has a 6.81-inch 1440 x 3200 AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, a powerful Snapdragon 888 chipset, a big 5,000mAh battery, up to 12GB of RAM, and a triple-lens rear camera with a 50MP main snapper, a 48MP ultra-wide one and a 48MP telephoto one (with 5x optical zoom).

However, you might also want to consider the standard Xiaomi Mi 11. This is more widely available and more affordable, while coming close to being as good as the Mi 11 Ultra. Like the Ultra it has a 6.81-inch 1440 x 3200 AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, plus a Snapdragon 888 chipset. It has a very different camera setup though, with a 108MP main snapper, a 13MP ultra-wide one, and a 5MP macro one.

Most affordable 5G Xiaomi phone

The Redmi Note 9T is the most affordable 5G Xiaomi phone at the time of writing. This has a 6.53-inch 1080 x 2340 screen, up to 6GB of RAM, a MediaTek Dimensity 800U chipset, a 5,000mAh battery, and a triple-lens camera, with a 48MP main sensor, a 2MP macro snapper and a 2MP depth sensor.

Top value 5G Xiaomi phone

The Poco F3 is arguably the top value 5G Xiaomi phone. It has a 6.67-inch 1080 x 2400 AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, a powerful Snapdragon 870 chipset, up to 8GB of RAM, a 4,520mAh battery, up to 256GB of storage, and a triple-lens camera with a 48MP main snapper, an 8MP ultra-wide, and a 5MP macro lens. All that and it starts at just £329 SIM free.

Latest 5G Xiaomi phones

The latest Xiaomi phones at the time of writing are the Xiaomi 11T and Xiaomi 11T Pro. These are mid-range alternatives to the Xiaomi Mi 11 range but still have impressive specs. The Pro model has a 6.67-inch 1080 x 2400 AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, a 5,000mAh battery, incredibly fast 120W charging, a speedy Snapdragon 888 chipset, and a triple-lens camera, with a 108MP main sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide and a 5MP telemacro.

The standard Xiaomi 11T is a similar phone but with a slightly slower MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chipset and slower charging – though at 67W it’s still very fast.

Xiaomi in summary

Xiaomi is a company that just about does it all when it comes to smartphones. From its premium Xiaomi Mi 11 range to the mid-range 11T and Poco phones, down to the budget Redmi handsets, there’s something for everyone here.

It’s a lot like Samsung in that sense, and like Samsung it sells an enormous number of handsets, both in terms of different models and the sheer number of units it shifts. While working out which Xiaomi phone is the best choice for you can sometimes be tricky, the brand itself is one you can rely on.
